Earwax Removal

Safe, gentle, professional cerumen removal performed by Doctors of Audiology — with the right tools and the right training to protect your hearing.

Why Professional Earwax Removal Matters

Earwax (cerumen) is your ear’s natural defense system. It traps dust and debris, moisturizes the ear canal, and helps protect against infection. For most people, earwax works its way out on its own. But when it builds up or gets pushed deeper into the canal, it can muffle hearing, cause discomfort, ringing, dizziness, or even temporary hearing loss — and it can damage hearing aids.

At-home cleaning kits, cotton swabs, ear candles, and irrigation bulbs often make impactions worse. They can scrape the canal, push wax further in, or perforate the eardrum. The safest way to address an earwax problem is to have a trained provider take a look.

How We Remove Earwax at Elevate Audiology

Our Doctors of Audiology perform earwax removal in-office using video otoscopy and the technique best suited to your ear canal anatomy and the type of wax we see. Options include:

  • Curettage — gentle removal with a small, lighted instrument under direct visualization.
  • Suction — low-pressure microsuction that pulls wax out without flushing the canal.
  • Irrigation — controlled, lukewarm-water lavage when the wax is soft and the eardrum is healthy.

We always start by looking inside both ears, talking through what we see, and explaining the plan before we begin. If we discover something that warrants a referral — an active infection, a perforation, or another medical concern — we’ll get you to the right provider quickly.

When to Schedule

Consider an earwax check if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • A sudden change in hearing or a feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Ringing, buzzing, or whistling that wasn’t there before
  • Itching, drainage, or an odor
  • Dizziness or off-balance feelings
  • Hearing aids that suddenly sound weak, distorted, or whistle more than usual

Hearing-aid wearers benefit from regular earwax checks because cerumen is the most common cause of hearing-aid breakdowns and reduced sound quality. We can typically address routine wax management as part of your hearing-aid follow-up visits.

What to Expect

Most earwax-removal appointments take 15 to 30 minutes. You’ll see clear before-and-after images of your ear canal, you’ll know exactly what we did, and you’ll leave with care instructions tailored to your ears. If your wax tends to build up quickly, we’ll talk through a maintenance plan so it doesn’t become a recurring problem.

Earwax removal FAQs

Is it safe to remove earwax at home?

Sometimes, but it depends on your ears. If you have pain, drainage, a hole in your eardrum, ear tubes, or sudden hearing loss, do not try home removal. A quick exam helps us choose the safest option.

Should I use cotton swabs?

No. Cotton swabs often push wax deeper and can irritate the ear canal. That can make symptoms worse.

How do you remove earwax in the clinic?

We look in your ears first, then use the method that fits your ear canal and the wax type. Common options include gentle suction, small instruments, or irrigation when appropriate.

How long does an earwax removal visit take?

Most visits take about 20 to 30 minutes. If wax is deep or very hard, it can take longer.

When should I schedule an appointment?

Schedule a visit if you have clogged ears, muffled hearing, ringing, fullness, or hearing aid feedback and you think wax could be the cause.
